Rugby’s ruling Conservative cabinet have agreed to continue a popular scheme which provides free weekend parking in the town centre yesterday evening.
Cllr. Carolyn Robbins, the Councils Corporate Resources Portfolio Holder stated at the meeting that footfall in the town centre had risen since the scheme was introduced. Cllr. Robbins said, "Footfall in the town centre has increased by over 7% in the last year. This is really good news for the retailers and for Rugby. This is in spite of the national trend that shows a decrease in footfall across the country".
Before February 2019, when the scheme was first approved, parking was free in many borough council car parks on Sundays and weeknights from 7pm until 8am. But the proposals saw free parking all day on Saturdays and Sundays, with parking free between 6pm and 6am on weeknights.
