Police are warning Rugbeians in the local press to remain vigilant after receiving reports of suspected telephone scams recently. Scam callers claiming to be police have been calling local pensioners asking them to withdraw money from their banks, then ask the pensioners to tell them the serial numbers of the notes. The scammers would then claim that the money are forgeries and arranged for them to be collected later that day.
Borough Councillor Dale Keeling has come across such an incident today. Concerned residents making comments on a residents Facebook Page have received a call from number 01618505763 where a scammer is claiming that a law suit is pending against the caller. A quick online search reveals the same number has been used by scammers claiming to be from HMRC.
Cllr. Dale Keeling said, 'I have reported this number to Trading Standards. I think most of us, including myself have received this type of un-wanted calls. Standard advice is never transfer money to an account of someone you don't know and don't be pressured into withdrawing money, or leaving it unattended. If you get a suspicious call, hang up and phone the police using a different phone if possible. Never give out details of bank accounts to anyone you don't know." Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity to police on 101, or 999 if a crime is in action."
